Asterix , first Asterix the Gaul , is a Franco-Belgian comic strip series created on October 29, 1959 by the French screenwriter René Goscinny and the French cartoonist Albert Uderzo in issue no . 1 of the French newspaper Pilote . After the death of René Goscinny in 1977, Albert Uderzo continued the series alone, then handed over in 2013 to Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad.

The series features in -50 (shortly after the Roman conquest) a small Gallic village in Armorica which alone continues the fight against the invader thanks to a magic potion prepared by the druid, this drink giving superhuman strength to anyone in drinks. The main characters are the warrior Asterix and the menhir deliveryman Obelix, charged by the village with foiling the plans of the Romans or supporting anyone seeking help against the Roman Republic.

Published in Pilote from 1959 to 1973, the series was published in parallel as a hardcover album, for the first twenty-four albums, first by Dargaud editions, then from 1998 by Hachette editions, and finally by Albert René editions for the ten albums. following. The cumulative sales of the albums, translated into one hundred and seven languages, represent 350 million copies, making it the best-selling European comic book in the world.

The series is above all humorous and mainly parodies contemporary French society through its stereotypes and regionalisms, as well as emblematic traditions and customs of foreign countries. The comedy of repetition is very present, notably with the shipwreck of the pirates. The drawing is semi-realistic, strongly inspired by the Marcinelle school.
