Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ( Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens ), or simply called Star Wars: The Force Awakens ( Star Wars: The Force Awakens ) for the promotion, exploitation and merchandising, is an American space opera science fiction film co-written and directed by JJ Abrams, released in 2015.
It is the seventh installment in the Star Wars saga; it follows Episode VI Return of the Jedi , thirty-two years after its release – a time shift preserved in the narration. It features the characters of the first trilogy, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Chewbacca, and the central protagonists of the new generation, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and the evil Kylo Ren. The title, The Force Awakens , refers to the heroine Rey, who discovers her powers during the film.
The Force Awakens is the first film in the third Star Wars trilogy planned and announced after the acquisition of Lucasfilm by The Walt Disney Company, for $4 billion, in October 2012. The film is produced by JJ Abrams, his collaborator longtime Bryan Burk and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. In addition to directing and producing, Abrams also co-wrote the film with Michael Arndt and Lawrence Kasdan, who co-wrote the original trilogy films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
The film exceeds a billion dollars in revenue in twelve days, in worldwide circulation - with the exception of China where it was released in January 2016 - which constitutes a historic record for speed. The Force Awakens then became the highest-grossing film of all time in North America, surpassing Avatar in twenty days, with $764.4 million in revenue. In February, it was finally the third film to cross two billion dollars in global revenue, after Titanic and Avatar .
