The name Tatooine finds its origin in the Tataouine desert, in Tunisia (site of a disciplinary garrison, the Bat d'Af, during the French presence), country where the scenes of the humidity farm were filmed of Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's adoptive uncle, in the first film. This filming location was again used for the second trilogy produced by George Lucas. However, many other scenes were filmed in Death Valley in the United States.

A planet appearing in five of the seven films in the saga, it has a crucial importance for the development of the saga. In episode I, Jedi knight Qui-Gon Jinn makes a stopover there to repair his ship and discovers Anakin Skywalker, future Darth Vader. After ten years of training, he returns to Tatooine to save his mother from the Tuskens but arrives too late. At the same time, he meets his in-laws there.

Obi-Wan Kenobi takes refuge there at the end of Episode III after the massacre of the Jedi, watching over the newborn son of Anakin and the deceased Padmé Amidala, Luke, whom he entrusts to his uncle and aunt Owen and Beru Lars.

In Episode IV, nineteen years later, Luke Skywalker still lives on Tatooine with his uncle and aunt on the Lars farm. Dreaming of adventures and dangers, he will meet the droids of the Rebellion, C-3PO and R2-D2 who are sent on a mission by Princess Leia Organa (the latter's twin sister) in order to find the old Jedi general Obi-Wan Kenobi. After several adventures, Luke finally meets Obi-Wan, who now calls himself Ben Kenobi. After his family is massacred by a horde of Stormtroopers, Luke travels to Mos Esley with his companions and they fly off the planet aboard the Millennium Falcon, a pirate ship led by Han Solo and his wookie co-pilot Chewbacca.

Four years later, Luke returns to his home planet with Leia, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian and the droids to invade the lair of the tyrannical Jabba the Hutt, in order to free Han Solo from his carbonic block, which had been removed by the hunter of bounties Boba Fett. The mission, ending in the death of the Hutt and his henchmen, is a brilliant success.

  • Mos Eisley is one of the main cities on Tatooine. It is the lair of many pirates, bounty hunters and smugglers, because their activities are facilitated by the presence of the spaceport, and by the absence of the Republic and then the Empire (Tatooine is an outer rim planet ).
