R2-D2 (also called D2-R2 in the French version of Episode IV) is one of the emblematic characters of the Star Wars cinematographic saga, present in all seven films. R2-D2 is a small, ovoid-shaped robot that speaks in an electronic sound language resembling whistling sounds. He is usually accompanied by his friend C-3PO , a droid who understands him and with whom he forms a fun duo.
Its creator, the British Tony Dyson, died on March 3, 2016 on the Maltese island of Gozo where he lived.
R2-D2 was hosted by diminutive actor Kenny Baker, who sat inside for the first six episodes of the saga. The latter had a consulting role in Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens.
